PEG-MGF Overview

PEG-MGF is an isoform of Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1) that the body releases in response to intense physical activity and muscle stress by activating and proliferating muscle stem cells, known as satellite cells. These cells are crucial for repairing and rebuilding muscle fibers, and PEG-MGF accelerates this process. Bodybuilders and athletes use PEG-MGF to accelerate muscle repair and growth. PEG-MGF is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) due to its performance-enhancing effects.

PEG-MGF Structure:

CAS Number: 108174-48-7

Molecular Formula (peptide portion): C121H200N42O39 (some catalogs list C124H204N42O41S1 reflecting sequence/terminus variants).

Molecular Weight (peptide portion): ~2.87–2.97 kDa depending on sequence/terminus and salt state; PEGylation adds the PEG mass (e.g., +5–40 kDa) depending on PEG size used.

Parent Compound: IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor-1), IGF-1Ec splice variant (source of the MGF E-domain).

Monoisotopic Mass (peptide portion): 2,865.5 Da for C121H200N42O39 (representative calculation); PEGylation increases mass accordingly.

Synonyms:

  • Pegylated MGF
  • PEG-IGF-1Ec
  • PEG myotrophin
  • PEG-MGF E-peptide

Research Areas:

  • Skeletal muscle regeneration & hypertrophy: activation of muscle progenitors/satellite cells and hypertrophy after damage/overload.
  • Cardiac protection/regeneration: post-MI models exploring local delivery of MGF E-domain for functional recovery.
  • Neuro: reports of neuroprotective actions of the E-domain in ischemia models.
  • Cartilage/Intervertebral disc (IVD): studies on protection against mechanical-overload apoptosis in nucleus pulposus cells.

PEG-MGF is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) due to its performance-enhancing effects.
